Sundeep Bibra Cody Frank Period 7 Career Project: Earth Science Teacher For our career project we chose to be an Earth Science Teacher. We wanted to learn a little bit more about the teachers at our school and about what they had to do just to become teachers. In order to be an Earth Science Teacher, you have to make sure all the students learn what the science state standards tell them to learn, but you have to do it in a way that is easy and, hopefully fun, way to learn. You also have to have great communication skills and be very good at public speaking. Talking is a big key in being any kind of teacher. And in science it is harder because you have to teach the kids how to remember something and what to remember. You have to be able to speak loudly so the children can hear you, and you need to be able to talk to all of them. You need to be able to answer all their questions, and do it in a way that all the kids can understand easily. The duties you have as a teacher are making sure you now how to plan the year based on your state standards so all the kids learn all they need to know for next year. Also you need to make up lessons that the kids can understand. Planning lessons can take a lot of time. Making homework and classwork can also be a time consuming process. You also have to take a lot of your free time to grade tests, homework, and classwork. Working time can add up to over 40 hours a week. Teachers are in high need because every school in every state needs a teacher. In 2006 there were over 4 million teachers in the world. There isnt really any maximum for schooling to become a teacher because youre always learning new things as time goes by. But for minimums, you can become a science teacher with only a bachelors or masters degree in education and a focus in science. But, many science teachers also choose to go on to complete their MS or PhD in a certain science field. You would also probably need some training in computers, in order to create a PowerPoint or lab setups for the kids. The pay varies from state to state. Also, the grade level you are teaching affects your yearly income. In a California high school the range would be between 40-80k per year. They can also make more money by working in summer school. The best part of being a teacher is the satisfaction of knowing you taught something to someone and they appreciate you for that. The worst would probably be those few kids who would just ignore whatever you say and do what they want. It is also and interesting job, as you would be learning with the kids and get to know them and help them. Overall, Earth Science Teachers are very respectable people and have some of the nicest personalities. They know what they're doing and make sure you do as well.
